Ecodesigner of the week: Month of Sundays

Hi all! I'm a bit busy today so I'm just bringing you some photos from one of my favourite finnish designers: Month of Sundays. These photos are from their lookbook Spring / Summer 2014. I love their designs because they're so timeless yet modern. Now their materials may not be recycled, but their production is local and all the materials naturel. And when the design is as timeless as this, you can wear the garments for years. 

"In the SIXTH Month of Sundays collection for SS14 the colors and materials find their inspiration from the Finnish granite rocks in all their shades and textures. The denim items are made in soft linen mixes and knits in Italian cotton blend yarn with abstract knitted text lace “It took me a month of sundays”. All the leather items are in Finnish vegetable tanned leather and our knit wear are knitted in Finland. The collection items are easy to combine to create interesting color and texture mixes."

Month of Sundays on varmaan useille jo tuttu merkki, mutta en voinut olla postaamatta kuvia heidän uudesta mallistostaan. Month of Sundays kuuluu omien lempimerkkieni joukkoon, ja tämä kokoelma ei tuota pettymystä. Modernia mutta ajatonta suunnittelua - siinä hyvä resepti kestäville vaatteille, minun mielestäni. Sillä vaikka Month of Sundays ei käytäkään esimerkiksi vain kierrätysmateriaaleja, on tuotteet valmistettu lähellä ja hyvistä raaka-aineista. Kun vaatteen käyttöikä on pitkä niin siitä on iloa kauan.

What's up friday / Flower power

I can't believe it's been yet another week! Time really flies. This week has been full of ups and downs - living abroad is not always easy! Lucky thing it's a week end soon. What are your plans? I'm doing some studying, hopefully we'll finish the bedroom and we've been talking about visiting a museum one of these days.

Taas yksi viikko takana, enkä tajua mihin se on hävinnyt! Vaikka on tähän viikkoon mahtunut vaikka minkälaista, ulkomailla asumisessa kun on välillä huonommatkin hetkensä. Mutta onneksi on perjantai vai mitä! Onko jo jotain perjantai/viikonloppusuunnitelmia? Minulla on tiedossa vähän opiskelua, makuuhuoneen viimeistelyä ja lisäksi olisi mukavaa piipahtaa jossakin Pariisin museoista.

Jos on juhlia tiedossa, niin täältä löytyis vinkkejä parempiin bilekuviin! Ja toki viikonloppuun pitää mahtua vähän söpöstelyäkin. Viettäkäähän oikein hyvä viikonloppu ihanaiset! Tässä vielä teille viikonloppukukat läheiseltä torilta.

Bedroom plans

Do you know Sketchup? It's a free 3D design program. We used it for planning the renovations at our place and thought that it could help us also to determinate the decoration more in detail. And it totally did. So here are our plans for the bedroom! 

In my previous post I already told you guys a bit what style we're going for. It's a decent size room (about 12 m2) but we needed it to be multifunctional. We wanted all these to fit into the room:
-a bed, obviously (140 cm wide)
-Storage for all our clothing etc
- At least one of the chairs we "herited" with the place (more on that here)
- We'll have a separate study but it will double as a guest room. So we needed a small desk also in the bedroom in case we needed to finish something urgent while having guests staying over

At first it seemed easy, but in reality it took as some time to figure out how to fit all these things into one room. As the bed was our biggest object we first determined its spot and build from there. Since we have huge windows with french balcons we can not really put any furniture in front of them, so that limits the choices. 

We played around with a couple of options but this was definitely the best one. In my mind I somehow imagined that we could maybe fit two armchairs and maybe some other furniture in here, but the 3d- model helped me to realize that we actually can't! There might still be some changes but this is mostly what it's gonna look like. We're going for white for the walls, with a dark grey accent wall maybe behind the bed. What do you think? Have you ever tried Sketchup or any other 3d- program for interior planning?

Oletteko kokeilleet joskus Sketchup-nimistä ohjelmaa? Se on ilmainen 3d-mallinnus ohjelma jonka saa helposti käyttöönsä netistä, mutta vastaavia ohjelmia löytyy toki muitakin. Me käytettiin kyseistä ohjelmaa kun suunniteltiin koko kämpän remppaa, joten aattelin että miksei siitä olisi hyötyä myös sisustussuunnittelussa. Ja kyllä muuten olikin! Joten tässä muutamia suunnitelmia makkarin sisustuksen suhteen.

Edellisessä postauksessa jaoin jo joitakin kuvia ja ideoita makuuhuoneen suhteen. Meidän makuuhuone on ihan kohtuullisen kokoinen, noin 12 neliötä. Sen pitäisi silti olla aika muunneltava ja monikäyttöinen, koska kaikkien näiden juttujen tulisi mahtua suunnitelmiin:
-Sänky, 140 cm
-Reilusti säilytystä vaatteille ja muulle
-Ainakin yksi meidän "perintötuoleista" (siitä lisää täällä)
- Pieni työpöytä, sillä vaikka meillä onkin erikseen työhuone niin se toimii myös vierashuoneena. Joten jos meillä on vieraita pidemmän aikaa niin mahdollisuus viimeistellä joku tärkeä työjuttu muualla on must!

Aluksi näiden kaikkien mahduttaminen ei vaikuttanut mitenkään ongelmalta, mutta kun alettiin piirrellä kaikkia huonekaluja 3d- malliin niin huomasikin miten paljon tilaa ne vei. Hetken sai käännellä ennen kuin kaikki sopi yhteen! Tilaa rajoittaa myös toisella seinällä ovi ja toisella isot ikkunat+ranskalainen parveke, joiden eteen ei voi oikein mitään laittaa. Jotenkin kuvittelen kaikki tilat aina mielessäni isommaksi kuin ne on, joten kyllä tämä 3d-homma auttoi hahmottamaan tilaa! Mun mielessähän tuonne ois mahtunut vielä vaikka kokonainen sohvakalusto :)

Pieniä muutoksia varmaan vielä tulee, mutta tältä se pääpiirteissään näyttäis. Seinät tulee todennäköisesti olemaan neutraalin valkoiset, ehkäpä yksi seinä tehosteeksi harmaa. Mitäs pidätte?  Ootteko muuten joskus kokeilleet näitä 3d- ohjelmia sisustussuunnittelun apuna? Kyllä mustakin vielä näiden avulla tulee ihan sisustusguru, enkä enää yritä tunkea kaikkia tavaroita samaan tilaan!

Ecodesigner of the week: Nurmi

Hey guys! Hope you had a great weekend. Today for our series of cool ecodesigners we have some photos from a finnish ecodesign label called Nurmi. I love their style and philosophy. I have several clothes from them, and they're all my favourites. 

"Nurmi is a Finnish sustainable clothing label that wants to bring back the times when both the quality and the design of clothes were meant to last.

The key factors for Nurmi are sustainability and openness. All products are ecological and ethical throughout the whole life cycle and the whole production process is transparent. Nurmi doesn’t only look good but it’s also good from within."

Here are some of my faves from their new Spring/Summer 2014 collection. What I like about Nurmi is also that they make clothes for men, since not so many ecodesigners do. The Nurmi jeans are pretty nice, too! You can find more info from their website, and if you don't have a retailer near you no worries, they also have a web store.

Anyway, next Monday we'll have another ecodesigner here, so if you have any tips I'd love to hear them! I'm always into finding new brands that are out there.

Hei kaverit, toivottavasti viikonloppu meni mukavasti! Tämän viikon ecodesignerina on suomalainen Nurmi, joka varmaan onkin jo monelle tuttu. Tässä kuitenkin muutamia kuvia heidän uudesta kevät/kesä 2014- mallistostaan! Nurmella on todella monikäyttöisiä ja mielenkiintoisia vaatteita, joita itsekin omistan muutaman ja ne on ihan lemppareitani. Lisäksi heidän ajatusmaailmansa suunnittelun taustalla on todellakin tutustumisen arvoinen.

Mahtavaa on myös se, että Nurmi suunnittelee vaatteita miehillekin, ecodesignmarkkinoilla miehet ovat nimittäin usein aika unohdettu asiakaskunta. Myös Nurmi-farkut on hieno konsepti: täysin Suomessa valmistetut farkut ekologisesta denimistä. Täältä löytyy lisätietoa merkistä, ja jos läheltä ei löydy jälleenmyyjää niin onneksi heillä on myös nettikauppa!

Our home story

so here it is, our place: entry on the middle, two bedrooms on the right, toilet, bathroom and kitchen on the right + a small storage!

So I already showed you guys some photos of our place but I haven't really told the full story. So here we go! We got our place back in 2011. We knew we were gonna move soon to Finland so one might ask why we wanted to buy a place in France. But there were several reasons to this: first of all, it was our long-time dream to buy an old place and renovate it, and since finding a place in Paris to rent is sometimes so difficult we kinda had to buy if we wanted to come back one day (it's crazy I know). Paris, however, is way too expensive so we knew we had to buy in the suburbs. But I really like our town so it's not that bad!

We searched for several months and saw really different places. And then we saw this one. It was definitely a fixer upper, but we saw a lot of potential.

 

Entry + Bathroom before

The thing is that the previous owners had passed away and didn't have any close relatives so we could choose either to keep all their furniture as well or have the place completely empty when we moved in. It seemed so sad just to throw everything away that we decided to keep everything. Plus we didn't have that much furniture! However, I wish we knew better. It took us so much more time to get rid of the things we did not want and just moving things around when we needed more space.

We did almost everything by ourselves so there was a lot of work. We both worked almost three months full time to get everything done before moving. And I think I already told you this last time, but we moved to Finland a day after finishing. Yeah. A day. So now we're really happy to be back after renting this place out for a couple of years!

We still see so many things here that need to get fixed. But this time we have more time and can tackle one room/object at a time which is great! I'll keep you posted and if you want to read more reno stuff just click the "renovation" tab on the right. See you soon!

Viimeksi postasin muutamia kuvia meidän kämpästä mutta tässä vähän kattavampi tarina koko kuviosta sekä muutamia lisäkuvia. Koko juttu on nimittäin hiukka monimutkainen kuten meidän tapauksessa aina, joten lisäselvitys lienee paikallaan ennen kuin mennään enemmän remppaan ja sisutukseen!

Alettiin etsiä asuntoa vuoden 2011 keväällä. Tiedettiin jo silloin että aiotaan muuttaa vielä saman vuoden puolella Suomeen joten kuulostaa ehkä hassulta että haluttiin ostaa kämppä. Siihen oli kuitenkin monia syitä: ensinnäkin meillä oli pitkäaikaisena unelmana ostaa ja rempata oma asunto, ja lisäksi vuokrakämpän löytäminen on välillä niin hankalaa että joissain tapauksissa on helpompi ostaa! Asuntojen hinnat Pariisissa on pilvissä, joten me suunnattiin etsinnät lähinnä "banlieuun", esikaupunkialueeseen. Mutta meidän kaupunki on tosi kiva joten ei mitään valittamista sen suhteen.

Etsintään kului pari kuukautta ennen kuin löydettiin tämä. Mielikuvitusta sai kyllä käyttää (ihan oikeasti, kaiken yuon kukkatapetin ja vaaleanpunaisuuden keskellä) mutta potentiaali löytyi.

Asunto oli itse asiassa edelleen täysin siinä kunnossa johon se oli edellisten asukkaiden jälkeen jäänyt. Heillä ei ollut lähisukulaisia eli ei varsinaisesti perijöitä. Niinpä me saatiin valita otetaanko asunto kalustettuna vai täysin tyhjänä. Kaiken pois heittäminen oli jotenkin surullinen ajatus (plus meillä ei ollut hirveästi kalusteita!) joten päätettiin pitää kaikki. Nyt kyllä tekisin ehkä toisin, koska tavaroiden siirtely remontin keskellä kului järjettömästi aikaa.

Me tehtiin lähes kaikki itse joten reippaan meni aikaa lähes kolme kuukautta, meiltä molemmilta täysaikaisesti. Ja kuten viimeksi taisin mainita, niin muutettiin siis Suomeen tasan päivä sen jälkeen kun saatiin kämppä valmiiksi. Sen jälkeen asunto oli vuokralla pari vuotta, ja nyt taas meidän omassa käytössä. Ja vielä on tosi monta juttua joita pitää parannella, mutta tällä kertaa onneksi väljemmällä aikataululla, joten voidaan edetä yksi huone/prokkis kerrallaan! Pidän kyllä tämän blogin ajantasalla siitä missä mennään. Mutta jos remontti/sisustusaiheet kiinnostaa niin ne löytyy kun klikkaa "renovation" tuosta oikealta. Nähdään taas!

What's up friday

This week has been kinda twofold: on the other hand I've spent a lot of time at home finishing some work-related sewing/crafting stuff, but on the other hand I've participated to some nice events, met some really interesting people and been really socializing! There are definitely some benefits to working at home (like drinking coffee from your favourite mug and wearing what you want!) but I need to see people as well.

Tomorrow I'm going to a boat tour on river Seine! I'm actually kinda excited, since you don't normally do that kind of "touristic" stuff when you live somewhere. I mean, during the time I've been in Paris I've only been once to the Eiffel tower, when we had friends visiting.

Also, this week I found this cool tote bag tutorial and this was a nice tip (in french though)! Hope you have a good weekend and see you later!

Hei kamut! Tämä viikko on ollut vähän kaksijakoinen. Toisaalta suuri osa viikosta on mennyt kotona viimeistellessä muutamia ompelu/käsityöjuttuja töihin liittyen, toisaalta on ollut vaikka mitä tapahtumia ja tapaamisia. Mutta se kyllä tasapainottaa aika hyvin, paljon aikaa kotona vietäessä on kiva myös välillä nähdä ihmisiä.

Huomenillalla olen menossa myös Seinen-risteilylle, josta oon oikeastaan aika innoissani! Tuollaisia "turistijuttuja" ei tule koskaan tehtyä kun asuu jossakin, vaikka ne voi välillä olla aika hauskoja. Eiffeltornissakin olen käynyt täällä olon aikana tasan kerran, kun oli kavereita käymässä.

Muutoin tällä viikolla löysin muutamia hyviä juttuja, kuten tämän laukkututoriaalin sekä tämän  vinkin (ranskaksi tosin). Hei hyvää viikonloppuna kaikille ja nähdään myöhemmin!

ecodesigner of the week: ekyog

Hey all! As some of you might already know, I'm really into ecodesign. I think it's great that we have so many brands out there that are both ecological and fashion forward! I happen to have a soft spot for upcycled design, but I'm also interested about recycled/otherwise ecological materials.

Over the years I've found some really cool stuff and I keep coming across things I'd like to share. So I thought - why not to start sharing them here with you guys? In conclusion, I'll be posting about one ecodesigner here every Monday!

Today I'm bringing you EKYOG and their new spring-summer collection. EKYOG is a french company and they have several stores in France. They use ecological materials and pay fair prices to their employees. They also have an association, Terre d' Ekyog, for doing different projects related to education and environment. It's a real success story and I love their modern, yet fun designs! Also, their prices are really affordable, so if you should ever be in Paris just check their stores. They also have an online store and they deliver internationally, but you might want to contact them before placing an order to see if they ship to your country.

Kuten joku on jo saattanut huomatakin, niin täällä ollaan aika intona ecodesigniin. Nykyään on onneksi tarjolla niin monia ekologisia ja oikeasti hyvin suunniteltuja tuotteita! Itseäni kiinnostaa varsinkin materiaalien uudelleenkäyttö, mutta myös muut vastuulliset vaihtoehdot on aina hyvä pitää mielessä.

Vuosien saatossa vastaan on tullut vaikka kunka paljon kiinnostavia designereitä, ja välillä ois kiva jakaa näitä vinkkejä muillekin. Joten tästä lähtien joka maanantai esittelen täällä viikon ekodesignerin :)

Sarjan starttaa ranskalainen EKYOG. Merkillä on liikkeitä ympäri Ranskaa, joten kyseessä ei ole mikään pikkujuttu. EKYOG käyttää tuotteidensa valmistukseen ekologisia materiaaleja ja maksaa reilusti myös tuotteidensa valmistuksesta. Lisäksi osa tuotoista menee Terre d'Ekyog- nimiselle yhdistykselle, joka työskentelee erilaisten ympäristö- ja koulutusprojektien parissa. Merkin vaatteet on aina moderneja ja hauskoja, ja vaatteiden hinnat on kohtuullisia. Joten jos liikutte Ranskassa niin kannattaa käydä katsastamassa! EKYOGilla on myös verkkokauppa joka toimittaa ulkomaille, mutta en ole koskaan testannut sitä, joten jos Suomeen tilaaminen kiinnostaa niin kannattaa tarkistaa asia.

As I told you I went to visit yesterday a vintage fair here in Paris. Here are some snapshots! There were lots of vintage clothing, but also accessories, jewellery, records etc. And that beauty parlor truck!

There were so many great pieces and I just love all those colourful 50s & 60s dresses. However I know that they wouldn't get much wear in my every day life. So I was on a lookout for something more modern and easy to wear. I came back with these:

I think they add a little something to my spring wardrobe! What do you think? Do you like shopping vintage?

Eilisen ohjelmaan kuului käynti vintagemessuilla ja tässäpä muutamia maistiaisia! Messujen tarjontaan kuului niin vaatteita, asusteita, koruja kuin levyjäkin, ja aika makea kauneushoitola! 

Tarjolla oli tietty mitä ihanimpia värikkäitä 50- ja 60-lukujen mekkoja, mutta tiedän kokemuksesta että olen liian mukavuudenhaluinen joten ne jäisivät mulla lähinnä keräämään pölyä komeroon. Joten etsin jotain vähän modernimpaa ja helppokäyttöisempää ja mukaan tarttui raidallinen hame ja korallinvärinen huivi!

Mitä tykkäätte? Itselläni on jo hirveä hinku käyttää jotain keväisempää ja ajattelin että nämä voisi auttaa! Tykkäätte te ostaa vintagea?

What's up friday

Sometimes I feel like I should write more about everyday life here in Paris. I kinda tend to forget that you guys don't know everything I do! So, a couple of weeks ago I started "what's up Friday" which I intend to turn into a weekly feature on this blog. I just want to chat about what's going on and about my latest discoveries and obsessions! So the spring has finally hit Paris, unfortunately along with a pollution peak. But at least the government is taking action and all the public transport is free for this weekend in Paris area!

Otherwise I'm still looking for a job and we're still renovating, so life is definitely a bit complicated at the moment. But I know that at the end it's gonna be alright :)

This week we visited Villa Savoy (as you can see) and it was really interesting. I highly recommend if you're into architecture! Otherwise this week I liked this DIY and these tips (my favourite colour!), and found this great project on pinterest.

What are you up to this weekend? I'm going to visit a vintage fair and see friends! (and continue reno!) I hope you have a great weekend!

Välillä tuntuu siltä että pitäisi kirjoitella tänne myös enemmän ihan arjesta Pariisissa. Jotenkin se joskus pääsee melkein unohtumaan, joten ajattelin alkaa joka viikon loppupuolella kertoilemaan mitä tänne oikein kuuluu ja mitkä jutut just nyt innostaa. Pariisiin on saapunut viime viikon aikana kevät (tai suomalaiselle melkein kesä!) mutta samalla myös valitettavasti ilmansaastetaso on huipussaan. Onneksi sille kuitenkin yritetään tehdä jotain, ja niinpä kaikki joukkoliikenne Pariisin alueella on tänä viikonloppuna ilmaista!

Muuten etsin vieläkin töitä ja me rempataan vieläkin, joten elämä ei ole ihan kaikkein simppeleintä just nyt. Mutta vähitellen olen alkanut uskoa siihen että kyllä kaikki lopulta aina järjestyy :)

Tällä viikolla tehtiin visiitti Villa Savoyhin joka oli todella mielenkiintoinen kohde, jos arkkitehtuuri kiinnostaa! Tykkäsin myös tästä postauksesta ja näistä vinkeistä (lempivärini!) ja löysin muutamia hyviä juttuja pinterestistä, esimerkiksi tämän korutelineen!

Onko jotain viikonloppusuunnitelmia? Minä aion suunnata vintagemessuille ja juhlia ystävän synttäreitä. Ja jatkaa sitä remonttia :) Hyvää viikonloppua kaikille!

My new toy: pfaff passport 2.0

So the last time I mentioned I was getting a new sewing machine. And here it is: pfaff passport 2.0!

It's nice to be able to move from one country to another rather easily (my bf being french we've moved between France and Finland a couple of times already) but there are inconveniences as well. Like the fact that I had to leave my good old sewing machine behind the last time we moved! I knew that I needed one over here as well (I just can not imagine a life without a sewing machine!) and I didn't want a similar as my other machine, because it seemed silly to own two machines that are just alike.

So after some consideration I went and bought this baby! It seemed like a good quality and it's one of the smallest on the market, making it easy to carry everywhere with you (thus the name!). For me, who has a small atelier at home and who might need to take the machine with me to give sewing classes etc, it was a perfect option. 

After making a couple of projects with it already, I can only say: so far so good! It's a smaller machine so it doesn't have all the features that some new models do have, but it's definitely enough for sewing clothing and things for home. There are also some cool stuff like the button for immediate tie-off, which is a nice and quick finish option.

I'm not gonna do a full review at least quite yet, but if you have questions please feel free to ask! Now I'd love to know: do you have a sewing machine and if so what kind? Are you like me and cannot do without or are you total opposite? Anyway, I'll be soon back with some new projects!

Kuvissa uusin kaunokaiseni: pfaff passport 2.0. Jouduin jättämään ihanan ompelukoneeni Suomeen joten uuden hankinta oli täällä edessä! Valinta kohdistui tähän ihan vaan helpon liikutettavuuden takia, ja tähän  mennessä oon kyllä ollut tosi tyytyväinen!

Onko sulla ompelukonetta ja jos on niin mikä malli? Kuulutteko samaan kastiin kuin minä (eli elämää ei ole ilman ompelukonetta) vai eikö ompelu innosta? Olisi hauskaa kuulla teidän lukijoiden mielipiteitä! Mutta hei, palataan pian asiaan ,mulla on nimittäin jo muutamia valmiita projekteja näytettäväksi!

365 PROJECT: FEBRUARY

GOOD STUFF:
- I remembered more often to take photos during the daytime and not just before going to bed!
- I bought this book for inspiration and luckily, one of my favourite bloggers started to share her photo tips
- I continued the projects even for some days I was just plastering walls etc (not very interesting) 

GOALS:
- Take more pictures with people in them!
- Arrange photos at the end of each week. Still working on this...
- Understand the manual settings better (nowadays I shoot sometimes with manual, sometimes with auto)

So that's about it! And hey, if someone has some easy photo tips for me let me hear them, okay? :)

365-PROJEKTI: HELMIKUU

JOTAIN HYVÄÄ:
- Muistin tässä kuussa ottaa enemmän kuvia kunnon päivänvalon aikaan, enkä juuri ennen nukkumaan menoa!
- Hankin tämän kirjan inspiraatioksi, ja yksi lempibloggajistani alkoi jakaa valokuvausvinkkejään
- Jatkoin prokkista vaikka useina päivinä tasoitin seiniä tai muuta yhtä mielenkiintoista

JOTAIN OPITTAVAA:
- Lisää kuvia ihmisistä, ei esineistä!
- Kuvien järkkäily joka viikon lopuksi. Vielä on opittavaa tämän osalta...
- Opetella ymmärtämään manuaaliasetuksia paremmin (nyt otan kuvia joskus automaatilla ja joskus manuaalilla)
