A (TINY) URBAN GUIDE TO ANGOULEME

Last weekend we made a small trip to a lovely French village of Angoulême. J-m was invited to the festival and I decided to tag along! It was so nice I wanted to share it with you. It is a small town so this is a small guide, but I hope you like it.

Angoulême is best known for two things: comics and cognac. Obviously, if you're interested in comics you should go during the festival. But even if you're not that into it, it's still a very nice festival happening in the different parts of town. Every place is fulled with people and in the cafes it's normal to see people drawing amazing art, just like that! But during the rest of the year there's still a lit of comic-related stuff to do, such as the museum and gorgeous murals.

But there's other stuff to do as well. Let's start (again) with the most important: food!

1. FOOD & COFFEE

- Les halles centrales Covered martketplace with a couple of coffee and lunch places as well. Relaxed atmosphere. If you want to buy local products or have a coffee "au comptoir", this is your place. Open every day, even Sundays, from 7am to 1pm.

- GalerieXXIV, Café des Artistes. Good coffee, interesting deco, english-style pastries, art on the walls and even a second-hand shop at the back room. Only if the place is full, be prepared to wait to be served. During the summer, the terrace must be a nice!

- Garden Cupcakes.  The decoration of the place is too cute, and seriously, the cupcakes were even better than the ones we had in NYC! This was one of my favourite places in the town.

- La Biscuiterie Lolmède serves coffee and lunch, and you can buy all kinds of sweet things to bring back home with you.

- And also Le Chat Noir, for having that famous cognac to finish off your evening!

2. SHOPPING (WITH A GOOD CONSCIENCE)

- 2nde Vie. The first place I headed was this cool eco-design shop . I just loved that upcycled red table! The staff is super nice and they're more than ready to tell you more about each piece. 

- Chez Cax. Good selection of vintage furniture with an industrial vibe. They also carry their own brand, madame CAX, a line of nice tote bags and home goods. 

- Le Boudoir de Marguerite is a heaven for second hand shoppers. They have everything for every taste and for every wallet. I spoke for some time with the owner, it was so nice.

3. HAVE A WALK

- Stroll down the charming narrow streets and les remparts. Go to a museum and enjoy your time.

So these were my tips to Angoulême! During this weekend trip I remembered that instead of visiting always the capitals, it's nice to visit small towns as well. Do you have some tips for discovering small towns? Any favourite places? I'd love to get new tips for future travels!

Viime viikonloppuna käväistiin Angoulêmissa. J-m oli kutsuttu sarjakuvafestivaaleille ja minä päätin lähteä mukaan! Angoulême on kyllä ihana ranskalainen pikkukylä ja tässä on minun suosikit sieltä. Parasta kyllä oli, että noin pienestä mestasta löytyy ekodesign-kauppa! Hurraa! Mutta hei, klikkailkaapa muitakin linkkejä jos on aikomuksissa suunnata Angoulêmiin. 

Jotenkin sitä tulee aina matkattua suurkaupunkeihin, vaikka välillä tällaiset pienet paikat on ihan parhautta. Mitkä on teidän parhaat pikkukaupunki- vinkit? Jokin tietty kylä jossa ehdottomasti kannattaa käydä? Olis mahtavaa saada lisää matkailuvinkkejä!

365 Project: January

Hey guys! It's been crazy around here, all the paper work etc. that you have to do when you move to a new country... But things should be getting better now! Anyway, remember that for the new year I made a resolution to participe to the 365 project? So, here's the deal: A photo a day for the whole year of 2014, and sharing my experiences at the end of each month.

So here it goes, the first batch from January! You can go to see them all here.

1.1.2014, the new years eve/ uusi vuosi

I have to say, this project did not start well. At the beginning of the month we were moving. We thought that we had packed quite well, but when the camera started to blink a red light for the low battery, the charger was nowhere to be found. Well, it still lasted for several days which was quite amazing, but I had to take photos really quickly! Eventually it ran out and for a couple of days before finding another charger I had to take photos with my samnsung smartphono, which is not that great for taking pics. 

Then there was the case of moving. This month we've lived in the midst of luggage and cardboard boxes. Let me tell you, it's hard to take an inspirational photo of a cardboard box. We also spent a week helping my parents-in-law to renovate. This was the hardest part considering the 365 challenge since there was no way I was going to bring my camera in all that dust! 

2.1.2014 LIIKE, a shop in Helsinki / LIIKE-putiikki Helsingissä

Looking at the photos from January, I'm sligthly disappointed in myself.I had hoped to develop a bit faster, I guess. But considering all the facts mentioned above I guess I could have done worse! But yeah, I decided to fix new objectifs for getting better pics during February.

365 PROJECT: JANUARY

GOOD STUFF:
- I took my camera with me almost everywhere, which is a good habitude
- Some of these photos I definetily wouldn't have taken without the challenge, and I'm glad I did!
- Photoshopping these pics I learned a couple of new gadgets on the new ps

GOALS:
- To keep all the equippement at the same place, as not to lose a charger when you need it...
- Choose and photoshop the pics at the end of every week, and not at the end of the month. I feel this way I'll learn faster what to do and what not to do!
- Find some inspirational blogs and books to keep me going

9.1.2014 Parisian rooftops / Pariisin kattoja

Huhhuh kaverit, mikä paperisota on välillä käytävä kun asuu ulkomailla. Mutta! Nyt ollaan jo voiton puolella ja voidaan keskittyä olennaisempiin asioihin :) Kuten 365-projektiin, johon lupauduin vuoden alussa. Diilin nimi on siis se, että otan kuvan joka päivä vuoden 2014 ajan ja jaan ne täällä joka kuun lopussa.

12.1.2014 The Finnish Institute of Paris / Pariisin Suomi-Instituutti

Vuosi ei tosin alkanut hyvin tämän prokkiksen osalta. Ensin muuton seurauksena hävisi kameran laturi, minkä vuoksi kuvasin ensin pari päivää ihan tosi nopsaan säästääkseni akkua, ja kun kamera lopulta kuoli, jouduin turvautumaan kännykkään. 

Lisäksi oli tosiaan jo edellämainittu muuttotilanne. Tämä kuu ollaan eletty matkalaukkujen ja laatikoiden keskellä, ja antakaas kun kerron: ei ole helppoa ottaa superinspiroivaa kuvaa pahvilaatikoista. Lisäksi vietettiin viikko appivanhemmilla remonttihommissa, mikä oli kaikista vaikein osuus tämän haasteen suhteen. Kameraa kun ei sinne remonttipölyn keskelle viitsinyt ottaa!

14.1.2014 Parisian rooftops, again / Pariisin katot jälleen

Toden sanoakseni, en ole hirveän tyytyväinen kaikkiin tammikuun kuviin. Olin kai kuvitellut pääseväni vähän parempiin tuloksiin. Mutta toisaalta, jos ottaa huomioon kaikki yllä luetellut tilanteet niin ehkä huonomminkin olisi voinut mennä! Laadin silti itselleni muutaman tavoitteen helmikuun varalle, ettei sama pettymys toistuisi.

365-PROJEKTI: TAMMIKUU

JOTAIN HYVÄÄ:
- Raahasin kameraa mukanani melkein kaikkialle, mikä on hyvä ottaa tavaksi
- Joitain näistä kuvista en todellakaan olisi ottanut ilman haastetta, ja nyt olen kuitenkin tyytyväinen että otin ne!
- Photoshopatessa näitä opin muutaman uuden kikan uudella photarilla

JA JOTAIN OPITTAVAA:
- No ne kamerakamat vois pitää aina samassa paikassa. Ettei vaikka laturi häviä.
- Valita ja käsitellä kuvat joka viikon lopussa mieluummin kuin koko kuu kerralla. Luulen, että niin pääsen nopeammin jyvälle hommasta!
- Löytää inspiroivia blogeja ja kirjoja jatkoa varten

Hey all! We arrived to Paris last week but have been terribly busy doing all the paperwork and all. So I don't have a lot of pics etc to share yet ;) But in the meantime you can get a much better idea of Paris by checking some of these videos I just discovered! Croptheblock is a website dedicated to videos of different neighbourhoods, made by locals. At the moment there are videos of Berlin and Paris, but I hope there will be more in the future! I especially liked this video, how about you?

Moi kaikki! Saavuttiin Pariisiin jo viime viikon puolella mutta paperihommat ja muut on vienyt kaiken ajan. Joten ei mitään erityistä jaettavaksi ainakaan vielä ;) Mutta sitä odotellessa voitta käydä katsastamassa näitä siistejä videoita Pariisista! Croptheblock on sivusto, jolla on lyhyitä videoita niin Pariisista kuin Berliinistäkin, eri puolilta kaupunkia. Toivotaan vaan että mukaan saadaan vielä enemmän kaupunkeja, näitä on niin hauska katsoa! Tykkäsin varsinkin tästä videosta, entäs te?

Pantone 2014

Hi all! Hope you all had a great New Year! We visited friends and had good time. We want to see everybody before moving to Paris, so in the next couple of days we're gonna be out from home visiting people. So just a quick update that goes with the New Years theme: the Pantone colors for 2014! Their pick for this year is Radiant Orchid , a vivid lilac with pink undertones. Now,since I'm not a lilac person, this is maybe not my favourite Pantone color. But I do think that it can be very flattering so I'm not against it either! What are your thoughts? Do you think this is going to be a big hit this year? Here are also other pantone colors for 2014! 

Hei ihmiset, oliko hyvä uusivuosi? Me kyläiltiin kavereilla ja otettiin rennosti. Seuraavien parin päivän aikana kyläillään lisääkin sillä olisi kiva nähdä vielä kaikkia ennen Pariisin lähtöä. Joten tässä vaan pikapäivitys uuteen vuoteen liittyen: Pantone-värit vuodelle 2014! Tämän vuoden väri on Radiant Orchid, hehku liila jossa on vaaleanpunainen vivahde. Itse en ole erityisemmin liilojen värien ystävä, mutta täytyy myöntää että tämä on aika kaunis sävy joka voi sopia monelle. Mitä mieltä olette - hitti vai huti? Ohessa myös muut pantonen vuoden värit!

New Year's resolution for 2014: the 365 project!

Hey all! Are you going to make any New Year's resolutions? I am going to do only one but it's big (at least for me): I'm going to commit myself to 365 project. It means that I'll be taking a photo a day for one whole year, starting tomorrow! 

I've been wanting to develop my photographing skills and I'd also want to learn how to capture all those little every day moments. It seems to me that all our photos are from travels or parties, even though we're both also kinda homebodies and like to spend time doing projects at home, too. I know I'm not going to change my habits unless I make it a daily task, so this is it! 

From what I've read from people who have already done this, it might get difficult along the way. So I'll need encouragement ;) And I'll post you photos at the end of each months to keep going! 

So, what about you? Do you already have a huge list of resolutions or none at all? I'd love to hear!



Hei olettekos tekemässä uudenvuodenlupauksia? Minä aion tehdä vain yhden mutta ehkä sitäkin vaativamman (ainakin itselleni): Aion osallistua 365-projektiin. Lyhyesti sanottuna aion siis ottaa kuvan joka päivä, huomisesta alkaen!

Olen halunnut oppia kuvaamaan paremmin jo jonkun aikaa, ja lisäksi tahtoisin oppia ikuistamaan kaikkia pieniä, arkipäivän hetkiä. Suurin osan meidän kuvista on nimittäin matkoilta tai juhlista, vaikka ollaankin välillä melkoisia kotihiiriä ja tykätään viettää aikaa kotonakin. Ja tunnen itseäni sen verran, että jos en tee tästä oikeasti päivittäistä tapaa, niin muutosta ei tapahdu!

Olen lueskellut muiden projektiin osallistuneiden kokemuksia ja niistä päätellen jossain vaiheessa homma saattaa käydä puuduttavaksi. Tarvitsen siis ehkä kannustusta jossain vaiheessa :) Ja porkkanana itselleni aion postata joka kuun lopussa kuvia tännekin!

4 goals

Now that I got started with wrapping up this year, I wanted to give you guys a quick update of my 4 simple goals. Remember? Roughly a month ago, I settled myself 4 goals to complete before 2014. Well, now that we only got a day left of this year I'd say it's a good time to see what happened! 

MY 4 SIMPLE (OR NOT SO SIMPLE) GOALS BEFORE 2014:

1. Pack with good energy
Accomplished! Well, there were moments when I thought we were simply nuts for moving again, but at the end it wasn't as bad as I thought it could be. We did also dance occasionally :)

2. Have one more veggie hamburger at Kokomo
Not accomplished! But I had a very similar hamburger at my farewell dinner with colleagues at another restaurant, so I'd say it was close.

3. Continue traditions, aka the Photobook Project
Accomplished and I'll show you the results soon!

4. Spend some quality time with my family
Accomplished! For the last week or so we've relaxed, watched lot of movies and played board games. It was rest much needed after this crazy year.

In overall, I think that for once I managed to pick goals that were manageable. But there was still a difference of thinking them as goals and not just as a list of things that I was going to do. It just made them seem more concrete. So I'm definetily doing this again soon and actually I'll be back with my New Year resolutions soon!



Nyt kun aloin laittamaan tätä vuotta kokoon niin jatkettakoon samalla linjalla. Nelisen viikkoa sitten kirjoitin itselleni neljä tavoitetta loppuvuodeksi. No, nyt loppuvuotta on enää päivä jäljellä joten lienee hyvä hetki katsastaa tulokset!

4 SIMPPELIÄ (TAI VÄHEMMÄN SIMPPELIÄ) TAVOITETTA ENNEN VUOTTA 2014:

1. Pakata tyylillä
Tavoite saavutettu! Välillä tosin epätoivo meinasi iskeä, mutta yleisesti koko homma meni paremmin kuin kuvittelin. Paljastus: myös muutamia tanssitaukoja pidettiin :)

2. Syödä vielä yksi kasvishamppari Kokomossa
Ei saavutettu! Mutta, läksiäisillä työkavereitten kanssa söin lähes yhtä hyvän. Joten korjaan että puoliksi saavutettu!

3. Jatkaa hyväksi todettua perinnettä, ts Kuvakirja- projekti
Saavutettu ja lupaan näyttää tulokset pian!

4. Viettää laatuaikaa perheen kanssa
Saavutettu! Viikon ajan ollaan vaan oleiltu, katottu leffoja ja pelattu lautapelejä. Paljon kaivattu lepo tämän hullun vuoden päätteeksi!

Luulenpa että kerrankin onnistuin valitsemaan tavoitteita; joiden toteutuminen oli mahdollista. Mutta on kuitenkin ihan eri juttu, että ne olivat tavoitteita eikä vain lista asioista, joita aion tehdä. Jotenkin tällainen tavoitelista teki koko homman konkreettisemmaksi, joten suosittelen kokeilemaan! Itsekin aion, ja niinpä palaan pian uuden vuoden lupausten kanssa!

2013 Round-up + 12 unpublished photos

Hello! Hope you have spent good holidays! I know I have, doing nothing much, just watching movies on a couch and spending time with the family :)

Anyway, now that the year 2013 is drawing to an end, many people are doing round-ups of the year. And so I thought that I would too :) I just finished pasting together our photobook of the year and in that process I found so many forgotton photos that I thought I could share some with you too. So here it goes!






We started the year with like minus 20 c degrees. Brrrr! But we also did some winter sports, such as ice skating and skiing. The year stared in a good but busy atmosphere - I had just graduated and started a new job, on top of which I did some more work stuff and some personal projects. I had beeing writing to this blog already for some time but not that often, and as a new years resolution I had promised myself to update it more often, which I did, too!

In the springtime; we lived in downtown Helsinki and loved it - even though we were living on a flat that was halfway in the ground! Here's a photo of a view from our window and from one of my favourite streets, that I would cross every day to go to work. There was also another Recycling Factory and we visited St. Petersburg, where the last photo is from!



One of the absolute highlights of the year was visiting New York City for my birthday! One of my best memories from there was kayaking on the hudson, where we took this photo. It was raining the whole time and we were completely soaked, but it was worth it.

Unfortunately, we had to move to a new appartment far from the center, but on the good side we got a garden and did a lot of bbq during the summer! I also did some projects for our garden.

For midsummer we rented a nice cottage with friends and spent the most relaxing weekend over there. Loved the midsummer light!



We also visited j-m's parents in southern france. This is one of my favourite pics even though it may not look so special - I just like having photos from which I can recall all these little moments and what people were doing, instead of having just pictures where people pose.

In the autumn we had a lot of visitors in our place and did a lot of fun stuff with them - for example went to Tallinn, where the last pic is from. We also enjoyed the harvest season and had fun for Halloween! We made up our mind to move back to Paris, and thus the end of the year was quite busy with packing/organizing etc.



Not all of you may know this, but swing dance is one of our favourite hobbies! We are still total beginners but this year we learnt a lot, thanks to amazing teachers. At the end of the year we also helped organizing some events where we had dance floor full of people keen to learn! It was so much fun. I also went shopping for christmas gifts and enjoyed the holiday season overall. We spent the Christmas with my family and packed away all our stuff to storage.

It was nice to put together this post, if not for anything else then for myself :) There was stuff I had quite forgotten! What a year! This new year will start in a very different way: I don't know yet where I'm going to work or what is going to happen next year, but I'm curious to find out!

Hei kamut! Nyt kun 2013 lähenee loppuaan niin ajattelin vähän laittaa nippuun tämän vuoden tapahtumia - muutamien uusien kuvien kera, jotka löysin koneen uumenista :) 

Vuosi alkoi mukavasti mutta kiireisesti. Olin juuri valmistunut ja aloitin uudessa työpaikassa, minkä lisäksi tein kaikenlaisia muita työprokkiksia ja vähän omia juttujakin. Blogi oli ollut kuvioissa jo jonkun aikaa mutta uudenvuoden lupauksena päätin postailla vähän useammin, mikä on myös pitänyt!

Alkuvuoden asuimme yhä Krunikassa - yhä lempiseutujani Helsingissä. Valitettavasti jouduimme muuttamaan toukokuussa, mutta toisaalta saimme vaihtokaupassa lisää tilaa ja taas uuden kokemuksen. Kierrätystehtaan kanssa kului aika mukavasti keväällä, kesällä taas omassa puutarhassa, syksyllä juhlimme  Halloweenia ja talvella kävin shoppailemassa hyvän mielen joululahjoja. Lisäksi harrastimme ahkerasti swingtanssia, ja vaikka ollaan vieläkin ihan aloittelijoita niin kehityttiin kyllä huimasti tänä vuonna! Ja yhteisissä teetansseissa ja niiden järkkäämisessä riitti puuhaa ;)

Vaikka kotonakin oli kaikenlaista, ei me sentään ihan omien seinien sisällä maltettu pysyä. Kotimaan puolella käytiin mökkeilemässä juhannus kavereiden kanssa, jossa nautittiin ihanasta valosta. Lisäksi piipahdettiin Pietarissa, sukuloitiin Etelä-Ranskassa ja tehtiin pikareissu Tallinnaan. Yksi vuoden parhaista jutuista oli kuitenkin matka New Yorkiin syntymäpäiväkseni! Pitää mainita, että yksi siisteimmistä hetkistä siellä oli melontaretki Hudsonjoella. Satoi koko ajan ja tämä ranskalais-suomalainen pariskunta olikin ainoa joka reissulle uskaltautui sinä päivänä :D Mutta kannatti, ehdottomasti!

Vuoden loppupuolella päätettiin myös muuttaa takaisin Pariisiin ja siitäpä seurasi aikamoinen pakkaaminen. Nyt on kuitenkin kaikki kamat onnellisesti varastossa ja päästään kohta aloittamaan uudet seikkailut! Tää vuosi alkaakin aivan eri merkeissä kuin viime vuosi- itselläni ei ole töistä tietoakaan, tai mistään muustakaan, mutta jotenkin on kai oppinut että kyllä se elämä kantaa - niin kliseiseltä kuin se kuulostaakin.
