Koen että nimi Petit Helsinki kuvastaa paremmin elämääni suomalaisena Pariisissa, joten sille nimelle päivittyy nyt muutkin kanavani. Tämän blogin kautta pääsee seuraamaan behind the scenes- meininkiä kun tämä suomalainen laittaa pienyrityksen pystyyn Pariisissa, ja tarkoitus on tuttuun tapaan blogata myös matkustelusta, DIYsta, ecodesignistä ja paljosta muusta. Time for new adventures! I'm re-launching my business with a brand new name and lots of new ideas. This means that this blog is also changing name. Welcome to follow me in this exciting venture. BRIAR basic white t-shirt / sewing basics

Kun viime tammikuussa muutettiin takaisin Pariisiin, myin ison osan vaatevarastostani ja osa jäi varastoon Suomeen. Muuton ja uuden ompelukoneen myötä halusin ommella muutamia ihan perusvaatteita. Olen halunnut kokeilla Megan Nielsenin kaavoja jo pidemmän aikaa, joten ensimmäisenä ompeluun pääsi oikea klassikko, valkoinen t-paita Briar-kaavalla! 

Ja Briar ei päässyt pettämään. Kaava on hyvin tehty ja malli on rento perusteeppari, jonka jujuna kuitenkin on kaartuva helma. Lisäksi Meganin blogissa on ohjeet jokaiselle ompeluvaiheelle! Itse en ollut ennen kokeillut tälläistä päällikaulusta, joten sen kanssa kuvalliset ohjeet oli kyllä hyödylliset. 

Kuvat napattiin jo joku aika sitten visiitillä Villa Savoyssa, ja sen jälkeen olen käyttänyt paitaa jo monet kerrat. Myös lyhyempään malliin on ollut palat leikattuna jo hetken aikaa, kunhan vain ehtisi ompelemaan :)

Edellämainitun muuton myötä myös vanha kunnon saumurini jäi Suomeen, ja vähän jännitti mitä trikookankaan ompelusta tulee vain ompelukoneen avulla. Mutta no worries, hyvin sujui! Suunnitelmissa on nyt siis muitakin trikookangasprojekteja :)

Mitä tykkäätte? Luulen että tulen tekemään vielä useampia variaatioita, tykkään niin paljon tästä kaavasta :)

When we moved back to Paris, I sold/donated a lot of clothes and left some behind in a storage unit. So, when I got my new sewing machine I challenged myself to sew some basics. And as I had been wanting to try Megan Nielsen patterns for a long time, I decided to start with a basic white tee using the Briar pattern.

I really like this pattern. It's your basic tee with a little twist. What's more, there's tutorials for every step in Megans blog, which is really helpful. I opted for a tneckline binding beacuse I've never tried one, and the step-by-step photos made the construction easy to understand.

We snapped these photos some time ago in Villa Savoy. I've been wearing this t-shirt so many times this spring/summer, I should definetily do a couple of more! I already cut the pieces for a cropped version.

Also, after completing this garment I can just say that sewing jersey with my new sewing machine was so easy. I was a bit scared at first since I've always used my overlock machine for sewing stretchy fabrics, but since my overlock machine is 2000 km away that wasn't an option. But it turned out great!

MakerFaire & last weeks in pictures

These last couple of weeks have been really busy, with MakerFaire and all! I also participated to "pelotes soniques", a knitting event combining good musique and, well, knitting. I made the lovely necklace pictured in the last pic and a lot of yarn pom poms. It was so much fun! Hope you've been having good time lately as well!

Kiirettä on pitänyt viime viikot, MakerFairiin osallistumisen ja muun kanssa. Lisäksi osallistuin "pelotes soniques" -iltamaan Suomen instituutilla. Neulontaa ja hyvää musaa, mikäs siinä! Sain valmiiksi tuon alimman kuvan kaulakorun ja paljon pompomeja :) Toivottavasti teilläkin on ollut hyvä alkukesä!

Hei ja hyvää juhannusta kaikille! Meikätyttö ei juhlikaan tänä vuonna perinteisesti jussia vaan lähtee koko viikonlopuksi pitämään himmelityöpajaa Pariisin MakerFaire- happeninkiin. Voipi suomalaisittain kuulostaa tosi nurinkuriselta tehdä himmeleitä keskikesällä, mutta ite kyllä tykkään himmeleistä niin paljon että mikseivät sopisi joka vuodenaikaan :) Mutta jos satutte olemaan Pariisissa niin suosittelen tätä tapahtumaa. Maker Faire, l’événement international arrive enfin en France ! Les 21 et 22 juin 2014, Paris accueillera sa première édition au CENTQUATRE-PARIS. Le public pourra ainsi découvrir le phénomène du Maker Mouvement au travers de démonstrations, ateliers et conférences. Les exposants appelés « Makers » sont des inventeurs, créateurs qui partagent la passion de la fabrication sous toutes ses formes  (couture, menuiserie, cuisine, impression 3D, robotique, physique, chimie…). Cet événement pour tous, est un moment d’échange unique entre les Makers et les visiteurs qui seront incités à participer à différents ateliers, selon la règle d’or : nous sommes tous des Makers !

365 Project: January

Hey guys! It's been crazy around here, all the paper work etc. that you have to do when you move to a new country... But things should be getting better now! Anyway, remember that for the new year I made a resolution to participe to the 365 project? So, here's the deal: A photo a day for the whole year of 2014, and sharing my experiences at the end of each month.

So here it goes, the first batch from January! You can go to see them all here.

1.1.2014, the new years eve/ uusi vuosi

I have to say, this project did not start well. At the beginning of the month we were moving. We thought that we had packed quite well, but when the camera started to blink a red light for the low battery, the charger was nowhere to be found. Well, it still lasted for several days which was quite amazing, but I had to take photos really quickly! Eventually it ran out and for a couple of days before finding another charger I had to take photos with my samnsung smartphono, which is not that great for taking pics. 

Then there was the case of moving. This month we've lived in the midst of luggage and cardboard boxes. Let me tell you, it's hard to take an inspirational photo of a cardboard box. We also spent a week helping my parents-in-law to renovate. This was the hardest part considering the 365 challenge since there was no way I was going to bring my camera in all that dust! 

2.1.2014 LIIKE, a shop in Helsinki / LIIKE-putiikki Helsingissä

Looking at the photos from January, I'm sligthly disappointed in myself.I had hoped to develop a bit faster, I guess. But considering all the facts mentioned above I guess I could have done worse! But yeah, I decided to fix new objectifs for getting better pics during February.

365 PROJECT: JANUARY

GOOD STUFF:
- I took my camera with me almost everywhere, which is a good habitude
- Some of these photos I definetily wouldn't have taken without the challenge, and I'm glad I did!
- Photoshopping these pics I learned a couple of new gadgets on the new ps

GOALS:
- To keep all the equippement at the same place, as not to lose a charger when you need it...
- Choose and photoshop the pics at the end of every week, and not at the end of the month. I feel this way I'll learn faster what to do and what not to do!
- Find some inspirational blogs and books to keep me going

9.1.2014 Parisian rooftops / Pariisin kattoja

Huhhuh kaverit, mikä paperisota on välillä käytävä kun asuu ulkomailla. Mutta! Nyt ollaan jo voiton puolella ja voidaan keskittyä olennaisempiin asioihin :) Kuten 365-projektiin, johon lupauduin vuoden alussa. Diilin nimi on siis se, että otan kuvan joka päivä vuoden 2014 ajan ja jaan ne täällä joka kuun lopussa.

12.1.2014 The Finnish Institute of Paris / Pariisin Suomi-Instituutti

Vuosi ei tosin alkanut hyvin tämän prokkiksen osalta. Ensin muuton seurauksena hävisi kameran laturi, minkä vuoksi kuvasin ensin pari päivää ihan tosi nopsaan säästääkseni akkua, ja kun kamera lopulta kuoli, jouduin turvautumaan kännykkään. 

Lisäksi oli tosiaan jo edellämainittu muuttotilanne. Tämä kuu ollaan eletty matkalaukkujen ja laatikoiden keskellä, ja antakaas kun kerron: ei ole helppoa ottaa superinspiroivaa kuvaa pahvilaatikoista. Lisäksi vietettiin viikko appivanhemmilla remonttihommissa, mikä oli kaikista vaikein osuus tämän haasteen suhteen. Kameraa kun ei sinne remonttipölyn keskelle viitsinyt ottaa!

14.1.2014 Parisian rooftops, again / Pariisin katot jälleen

Toden sanoakseni, en ole hirveän tyytyväinen kaikkiin tammikuun kuviin. Olin kai kuvitellut pääseväni vähän parempiin tuloksiin. Mutta toisaalta, jos ottaa huomioon kaikki yllä luetellut tilanteet niin ehkä huonomminkin olisi voinut mennä! Laadin silti itselleni muutaman tavoitteen helmikuun varalle, ettei sama pettymys toistuisi.

365-PROJEKTI: TAMMIKUU

JOTAIN HYVÄÄ:
- Raahasin kameraa mukanani melkein kaikkialle, mikä on hyvä ottaa tavaksi
- Joitain näistä kuvista en todellakaan olisi ottanut ilman haastetta, ja nyt olen kuitenkin tyytyväinen että otin ne!
- Photoshopatessa näitä opin muutaman uuden kikan uudella photarilla

JA JOTAIN OPITTAVAA:
- No ne kamerakamat vois pitää aina samassa paikassa. Ettei vaikka laturi häviä.
- Valita ja käsitellä kuvat joka viikon lopussa mieluummin kuin koko kuu kerralla. Luulen, että niin pääsen nopeammin jyvälle hommasta!
- Löytää inspiroivia blogeja ja kirjoja jatkoa varten

25.1.2014 Galette de Rois, the pastry of the month! / Kuukauden ranskalainen leivonnainen

Hey all, today I wanted to share something I created some time ago. Remember how we went for a trip in France? Well, there was also other reason than just holidays to go there - my bfs parents had their 40th wedding anniversary. 40 years, just think of that! 

It was really hard to come up with a gift that would suit such a special occasion. Having been together for so long they pretty much had everything, plus our gift needed to fit to a suitcase for transportation! But we knew right away that we wanted to create something handmade, and something they can really use. So my mom and I came up with the idea of sewing some decorative cushions, because they could use them anywhere in their house.



We chose neutral colours we thought they'd like. We already had the linen,it's actually two old table cloths. There were parts we couldn't use anymore, so we had to go with quilting. And since we had to do that, I thought it would be fun to incorporate a message: Each cushion is actually composed of exactly 40 pieces, 20 on each side!


My mom finished her version with a lace she made herself and I embroidered mine with their initials and the date of their wedding. It took some time, but I think it was worth it!

I'm really happy with how they turned out. Even though I've always been sewing a lot, I haven't really been quilting that much. But now I got really inthousiasted 'bout it, since it's a great way of upcycling all those small pieces of fabric!

Now that we're on the subject: Have you recieved or given any handmade gifts? I'd love to hear!



Viimeisimmälle Ranskanreissulle oli erityisen hyvä syy: poikiksen vanhempien 40-vuotishääpäivät. 40 vuotta, aika mahtavaa vai mitä? Mutta lahjan keksiminen olikin sitten vähän vaikeampaa: jotain hyödyllistä, jotain joka mahtuu lentolaukkuun, jotain erityistä... Mutta yksi asia oli varma: haluttiin tehdä ainakin osa lahjasta itse. 

Lopulta keksittiin äidin kanssa tehdä nämä kaksi tyynynpäällistä. Ne on tehty vanhasta pellavakankaasta, joten piti pakostakin vähän tilkkuilla. Siitä syntyi idea: molemmissa tyynyissä on itse asiassa tasan 40 palaa, 20 kummallakin puolella. Lisäksi äidin tekemässä versiossa on itse nyplättyä pitsiä ja minä taas kirjoin toiseen tyynyyn nimikoinnit ja hääpäivän. Vaikka olen aina ommellut, en ole ikinä harrastanut hirveäsi tilkkutöitä, mutta tämä sai kyllä innostumaan! Tilkkutöihin voi niin hyvin käyttää kaikki palat ja kierrätetyt kankaat.

Summer event ideas - Think pink

This post will be the last of the summer event ideas series. Or it might also be that I'll write a quick post this w-e about the process of creating these craft models. When I started this blog I wanted it to tell also about the creative process, so behind the scenes we'll go!

Anyway here's some really pink ideas for your august events. Personally, I've never been too much into pink colour (but I've never hated it either!) but lately I've been more and more attracted to all things pink. I like it combined with other strong colours, like red and turquoise, or then as a pop of colour with a really neutral palette. 

How about you, are you into strong colours such as pink? Are your colour preferences constantly changing or do you have the same since long time? Maybe a bit out of topic, but I'm curious!

Tässäpä vielä viimeiset ideat juhlakoristeluihin. Tai voi olla, että tänä viikonloppuna kirjoittelen vielä näitten tekoprosessista, sillä aloittaessani tätä blogia halusin kertoa myös arkisesta työstä ja prosessista suunnittelun takana. Eli lisää siitä viikonloppuna!

Tällä kertaa mennään pinkillä linjalla. Henkilökohtaisesti en ole koskaan ollut pinkin suurin ystävä, jos en nyt vihaajakaan. Mutta viime aikoina olen huomannut tykkääväni siitä yhä enemmän ja enemmän. Joko muiden vahvojen värien, vaikka punaisen ja turkoosin kanssa, tai sitten neutraalissa väripaletissa väriläiskänä. 

Mites te, uppoaako vahvat värit kuten pinkki? Onko teillä samat lempivärit vuodesta toiseen vai vaihteleeko ne? Menee ehkä vähän aiheen ohi, mutta alkoi kiinnostamaan!

holiday redo

Even during the holidays, we've attacked some small projects. This one was a super easy painting project we did for j-m's parents. They were hosting a big party in their garden and we needed to do something with a couple of garden benches they had. So, some more blue paint and they were as good as new! It's amazing how much just paint can do, right?

There's another project coming I can't wait to finish to show you guys. I hope to finish is this week! How about you - Have you been doing some DIYs lately?

Lomallakaan ei maltettu ihan vaan lepäillä, vaan ollaan myös vähän uudistettu huonekaluja. Nämä puutarhapenkit maalattiin lomilla J-m:n vanhemmille, joilla oli puutarhajuhlat tulossa. Niinpä maalisudit käteen ja penkkejä uudistamaan! Aina ihmetyttää itseäkin, miten paljon maalitilkalla saa aikaan uutta ilmettä.

Ollaan me maalailtu meilläkin enkä malta näyttää lopputulosta. Jos vaan saisin verhoilun pikaisesti tehtyä loppuun! Mites te, oletteko uudistaneet tai kunnostaneet jotain vanhaa viime aikoina?

SUMMER EVENT IDEAS - Birds of a feather

Now that I started posting these event ideas, I thought I could just post them all. This time it's all feathers. I like incorporating feathers to a deco, they add such an airy touch (duh, yeah!) There are some more idea in this post that might go well together with these. Again, ask if there's something you want to know.

How about you, do you prefer white or colourfoul event decorations? I know I couldn't choose since I like both, but I'm still gonna ask!

Nyt kun aloitettiin kesäisillä juhlaidiksillä niin aionpa heittää tänne loputkin. Tällä kertaa höyhenteemalla mennään. Tykkään käyttää höyheniä tämäntapaisissa projekteissa, niistä tulee aina niin kevyt tunnelma (yllättäen!). Tässä postauksessa on lisää ideoita, jotka voisi sopia näiden kanssa.

Mites siellä puolella, tykkäättekö enemmän valkoisesta vai värikkäästä koristelumeiningistä? En kyllä itse osaisi valita, mutta onneksi aina voi kysyä muilta!

SUMMER EVENT IDEAS - All lavender

Sometimes new places or experiences remind you of something older. As in this case, all the lavender groving in Provence reminded me of these wedding deco ideas I worked on about 6 months ago. So here you go, grab an idea or two to organize any kind of a party! Now that the weather's still hot we should take a full profit out of it and organize as many garden parties as we can. Right? Never too many garden parties for me!

Joskus uusi paikka muistuttaakin jostakin vanhasta. Tässä tapauksessa Provencen laventelit saivat minut muistamaan nämä laventeliteemaiset hääkoristeet, joita tein viime talven aikana Tiimarille. Joten ajattelin postata ne, jospa niistä joku saisi idean tai pari seuraaviin bileisiin! Miten olis vaikka puutarhajuhlat, nyt kun säätkin on tuollaiset? Ja kutsutte sitten mutkin, puutarhajuhlia ei ole koskaan liikaa!

Miten on, aiotteko vielä osallistua/järkätä ulkoilmajuhlia tänä kesänä? Antaa palaa!

PS Palailin juuri Ranskasta. Oli mukava reissu, mutta ihanaa olla myös takaisin kotona!
