Viime viikonloppuna tuli tehtyä pikavisiitti ihanaan, aurinkoiseen Helsinkiin. Olen kokoamassa pitempää postausta Helsingin lempipaikoista, mutta tässä odotellessa ajattelin laittaa muutamia kuvia viikon takaisesta reissusta. Olisin voinut jäädä pidemmäksikin aikaa...

Last weekend I did a quick trip to lovely, sunny Helsinki. I'm putting together a post about my favourite places in Helsinki but as it'll take some time I wanted to share with you some moments from last week. Oh if I could have staid there for a longer time...

Shopping ecological & ethical gifts - Mifuko

 
Hey everybody! Just a quick heads-up for all the people in Helsinki: Taikametsä pop up store is still open until this Friday! 

I went a couple of weeks ago and I recommend it. It's held at a beautiful old villa, at the premises of Mifuko store. Mifuko is an ethical and ecological brand, focusing on houseware, jewellery, bags and such. The handwoven, colourful storage baskets are their specialty - they're quite cool, right?



What about the pop up store then? Let's let them speak for themselves: 

"In Taikametsä (The Forest of Magic) you can buy ecologically and ethically produced, animal and forest -themed Finnish design and much more."

In the recent years, I've become more and more avare of buying only quality products that are preferably also made ecologically. So, that's also what I want to give as gifts. Logical, righ? But honestly, sometimes it can just take you hours to look for an item that fills these requirements. So, if somebody does all the work for me and picks me a good selection, I've got nothing against it!

Heippa! Pikku vinkkinä kaikille Helsingissä majaileville: Pop up- kauppa Taikametsä on vielä auki perjantaihin saakka! Itse kävin paikan päällä jo muutama viikko, ja voin suositella piipahtamaan. Ensinnäkin miljöö on ihana - vanha puuhuvila Arabiassa - ja toisekseen, jos on etsimässä ekologisia ja eettisiä lahjoja niin täältä niitä löytyy! Kauppa on siis samoissa tiloissa Mifukon kanssa, johon myös kannattaa tutustua. Mifukon tuotteisiin kuuluu kaikenlaista kodin tavaraa, laukkuja ja koruja, mutta varsinkin nuo värikkäät korit on kyllä aika namuja. 

Viime vuosina olen alkanut ostamaan itse enemmän ja enemmän laatutuotteita, ja vielä mielellään ekologisesti tuotettuja. Joten, miksi en ostaisi niitä myös lahjaksi? Joskus tosin näiden kriteerien kanssa etsiminen käy aika vaivalloiseksi, joten on ihanaa, jos joku tekee sen työn jo mun puolesta.

Oh my, this week I've been in bed with a cold so it has passed so quickly! Obviously, I haven't been out much so I have nothing new to show, but instead I have some photos I haven't posted yet that I wanted to share.
 A couple of weeks ago we had a friend visiting us and together we wanted to find new activities. So, for the first time, we enrolled to a competition called Fotomaraton! Fotomaraton is an annual photography competition where competitors take 12 photos, one for each assignment, during 6 hours. The assignments are handed out in sets of 4 with 2-hour intervals.

Now we're really not professional photographs so some of our photos are not the best quality, since we also had to hurry to get all of them taken. But oh boy did we had fun snapping them! The competition also got us to places we wouldn't have gone oterwise (such as a food carneval at an old abattoir) and talking to people we might not had talked otherwise. 

So I guess the lesson was that everything's worth trying, even though you know you're propably not gonna nail it. It gets you out of your comfort zone. Have you done something like that lately? I'd love to hear! And have a good Sunday, you all!

Huh, tämä viikko on mennyt lähinnä sängyn pohjalla flunssasta toipuessa, joten paljon uutta kerrottavaa ei ole. Mutta onneksi löytyy vähän vanhempia juttuja!

Joitakin viikkoja sitten meillä oli hyvä ystävä kylässä ja haluttiin etsiä jotain uutta tekemistä Helsingistä. Joten, ihka ensimmäistä kertaa kummallekin, päätettiin osallistua Fotomaratoniin! Fotomaraton on taiteiden yönä järjestettävä kilpailu, jossa otetaan 12 annettuja aiheita vastaavaa kuvaa kuuden tunnin aikana. Aiheet saa neljän aiheen ryppäissä kahden tunnin välein.

Mehän ei kummatkaan olla mitään ammattikuvaajia joten kuvien laatu on vähän niin ja näin, varsinkin kun lopussa tuli vähän kiire. Mutta kylläpä oli hauska ilta! Kilpailu sai meidät paikkoihin, joihin ei muuten olisi menty, ja juttelemaan aivan uusille ihmisille. Joten ehkäpä illan paras anti olikin muistutus siitä, että joskus kannattaa kokeilla uutta, vaikka tietäisikin että nyt mennään metsään. Mukavuusalueen ulkopuolelle askuminen on oikeastaan joskus ihan, no, mukavaa.

and saw the film Helsinki forever with a friend while the sky was turning dark.

These last weeks have been happy but busy. We've had some friends visiting, and visiting city with them has made me rediscover Helsinki myself, too. I've been also doing some DIYing, but more on that note later!

I guess the summer is almost over here. It's already been a little chilly in the mornings. But I think I got almost everything done this summer that I wanted to do, and in some cases even more! How about you, do you still have summer things to do? Or are you already waiting for the autumn?

Muutama kuva ihanilta mutta kiireisiltä viime viikoilta. Meillä on ollut vieraita, ja heidän kanssaan on itsekin huomannut Helsingistä uusia puolia. Vähän DIYta on myös mahtunut kalenteriin, siitä lisää myöhemmin!

Kesä alkaa olla vähitellen lopuillaan, aamuisin alkaa olla jo vähän viileää. Tänä kesänä en edes tehnyt mitään suurta kesätekemis-listaa, mutta ihan huomaamatta suurin osa jutuista on tullut tehtyä! Onko teillä vielä joku pakollinen kesäjuttu tekemättä? Vai valmistaudutteko jo syksyyn?

Book swapping at the airport

So, at the moment we're enjoying the sun of the French Riviera! I'll be posting some more photos soon, but here's one cool thing I've recently found in the airport of Helsinki-Vantaa from where we departured - a book swap station. There are others in Helsinki, of course, but this one I find especially useful. I mean, if you forgot the take a book with you to read in the plane, you might find something here. And it's a good way to pass some time while waiting for the plane. This time I found nothing, but I left a couple of books I had and didn't want to re-read.

I think I've also found my perfect travel outfit - cozy, light-weight trousers, a comfy t-shirt and a big scarf in case it's cold in the plane. And my fedora for sure, otherwise it would be all crinkled if I had to cram it to the suitcase! All are thrifted except the fedora which I had to buy since I didn't find a used I liked.

Tällä hetkellä päivää paistatellaan Etelä-Ranskan lämmössä ja siitä lisää kuvia myöhemmin. Sitä ennen pieni vinkki kaikille Helsinki-Vantaan kautta matkaaville: tiesittekö että kentällä on myös kirjanvaihtopiste? Toki näitä löytyy muualtakin, mutta tämä on mielestäni ihan erityiskätevä - siellä voi viettää aikaa mukavasti konetta odotellessa ja ehkä löytää jotain luettavaa koneeseen. Tällä kertaa mukaan ei tarttunut mitään, mutta vein vaihtoon kotoa kylläkin pari opusta.

Kokeillussa yhdeksi parhaista matkustusasuista on muuten osoittautunut tämä: väljät ja kevyet pitkät housut, mukava t-paita ja iso huivi, jos koneessa on kylmä. Ja fedora, muuten sen joutuisi tunkemaan matkalaukkuun! Kaikki on kirpparilta, paitsi hattu, kun en löytänyt sopivaa käytettynä.

Staycationing

Like I said, we've been enjoying the summer mostly at home. But it doesn't mean we've only been lying on the sofa, actually we've been discovering a lot of new places! It's been a real staycation. The other day we visited Villa Elfvik, a nature house 10 minutes bicycle ride from our place.

There's a nature path we decided to take and then we stopped to take some photos...

And then we saw cows! I think it's kinda cool that even when living in the capital area, we can go see cows so near to our place.

After that, we went to visit The Gallen-Kallela Museum. It used to be the painters studio and home, and it was well worth visiting just for the architecture. There was a nice exhibition as well. We also had coffee at the garden, it was a really good coffee place.

I'm interested to know: what's your favourite mannet to spent holidays? At home or travelling? Or maybe a mix of both? This summer, we're doing both, since tomorrow we're packing our bags and heading to the southern France!

Tällä viikolla ollaan harrastettu lähimatkailua. Yhtenä päivänä käytiin Villa Elfvikissä, josta lähti ihana luontopolku. Nähtiin myös lehmiä! Ihan uskomatonta, että näin lähellä pääkaupunkia voi olla tällaisia paikkoja. Sen jälkeen käytiin tutustumassa Gallen-Kallelan museoon, joka oli näkemisen arvoinen ihan jo arkkitehtuurinsa takia. Onneksi pihalla oli myös mukava kahvila, jossa pystyi vähän virkistäytymään kulttuurikierroksen jälkeen!

Mutta nyt kiinnostaisi tietää mikä sun mielestä on paras tapa lomailla? Kotona vai matkoilla? Vai kenties molemmat? Tänä kesänä me tehdään vähän molempia, sillä huomenna lentokone suuntaa kohti Etelä-Ranskaa!
