Design process

Aug 11, 2013

So I wanted to tell you shortly about my design process. For each project it's very different of course - it all depends of the subject and whether it's a work on a group or just by myself. But I thought it could be fun to share the process behind some craft models.

Well, to start with, for this commission I recieved the materials to be used by the post. I also wanted to include as much as possible recycled everyday objects, such as tin cans and tree branches. I had pretty much free hands with what I was doing, we just decided together it would be best to have four or five different themes.

I like to start by browsing for some ideas. But I never want to copy a project, so I'm more in a search of colour schemes and atmospheres. For example, this photo was my inspiration for this. And this colour scheme I used for this. I also search for the right colours by myself, using water colours and such. I also have a pin board in my study, where I can collect all the random ideas.

The second part is sketching! I like to sketch, but also to work directly with the materiel. So sometimes there's no sketch and sometimes there's a lot. But sketching is always a good way to remember your ideas and to keep concentrated. When you're working on a commission, you can't only do your personal style, so sketching can help to find new ideas to work with.

After I know what I'm gonna do, I create myself a schedule and work with it. It takes a lot of time, of course, to create things by hand so I try to attack this phase as quickly as possible. But the good thing is that I can listen to music at the same time, it helps to get to work! For this project I didn't take the photos or do the styling myself, but sometimes I do that to. I like it the best when I can controll the process till the end!

I think over the years I've found the rhythm of work that suits the best for me. And my best tools: sketch book, schedule and good play lists! How about you, do you have some tips for working better? Do you like to work by yourself or in a group?

P.S It was funny to find these photos J-M took when I was working for this project! My hair is so long, I didn't remember :D I guess I'm working for these, so much pink!

Käsin tekeminen on tietysti hidasta, joten aikataulu on oleellinen.

it's the thought

Aug 10, 2013

Hey all, today I wanted to share something I created some time ago. Remember how we went for a trip in France? Well, there was also other reason than just holidays to go there - my bfs parents had their 40th wedding anniversary. 40 years, just think of that!

It was really hard to come up with a gift that would suit such a special occasion. Having been together for so long they pretty much had everything, plus our gift needed to fit to a suitcase for transportation! But we knew right away that we wanted to create something handmade, and something they can really use. So my mom and I came up with the idea of sewing some decorative cushions, because they could use them anywhere in their house.

We chose neutral colours we thought they'd like. We already had the linen,it's actually two old table cloths. There were parts we couldn't use anymore, so we had to go with quilting. And since we had to do that, I thought it would be fun to incorporate a message: Each cushion is actually composed of exactly 40 pieces, 20 on each side!

P7190336
My mom finished her version with a lace she made herself and I embroidered mine with their initials and the date of their wedding. It took some time, but I think it was worth it!

I'm really happy with how they turned out. Even though I've always been sewing a lot, I haven't really been quilting that much. But now I got really inthousiasted 'bout it, since it's a great way of upcycling all those small pieces of fabric!

Now that we're on the subject: Have you recieved or given any handmade gifts? I'd love to hear!

Olisi kiva kuulla ajatuksianne aiheesta!

Summer event ideas - Think pink

Aug 8, 2013

This post will be the last of the summer event ideas series. Or it might also be that I'll write a quick post this w-e about the process of creating these craft models. When I started this blog I wanted it to tell also about the creative process, so behind the scenes we'll go!

Anyway here's some really pink ideas for your august events. Personally, I've never been too much into pink colour (but I've never hated it either!) but lately I've been more and more attracted to all things pink. I like it combined with other strong colours, like red and turquoise, or then as a pop of colour with a really neutral palette.

How about you, are you into strong colours such as pink? Are your colour preferences constantly changing or do you have the same since long time? Maybe a bit out of topic, but I'm curious!

SUMMER EVENT IDEAS - Birds of a feather

Jul 29, 2013

Now that I started posting these event ideas, I thought I could just post them all. This time it's all feathers. I like incorporating feathers to a deco, they add such an airy touch (duh, yeah!) There are some more idea in this post that might go well together with these. Again, ask if there's something you want to know.

How about you, do you prefer white or colourfoul event decorations? I know I couldn't choose since I like both, but I'm still gonna ask!

SUMMER EVENT IDEAS - All lavender

Jul 28, 2013

Sometimes new places or experiences remind you of something older. As in this case, all the lavender groving in Provence reminded me of these wedding deco ideas I worked on about 6 months ago. So here you go, grab an idea or two to organize any kind of a party! Now that the weather's still hot we should take a full profit out of it and organize as many garden parties as we can. Right? Never too many garden parties for me!

Instructions only in finnish this time, but all the ideas are pretty simple to do! Comment if questions.

How about you guys, are you still gonna participate/organize any outdoor parties this summer?

PS I just got back from France today. It was an interesting trip but I'm glad to be home too!

Joskus uusi paikka muistuttaakin jostakin vanhasta.

Summer event Ideas - white & light

Jul 11, 2013

So I know that for the ones planning a wedding this summer this comes too late, but you can still use these ideas for an other event, right? I worked on these so many months ago that I already kinda forgot them, ha :D Since I was working for a company I had to use their materiel but feel free to just take the idea and make it with something you already have! Anyway, I believe that having something handmade for your event is always a good idea.
Instructions in finnish but their pretty easy - ask me if any questions!

Wonderful wood

Jun 30, 2013

This weekend has been great! We've spent a lot of time home, which has let me also some time to create new things. As couple of times before, the Jake & Maya collective's Trash 2 Treasure competition inspired me to create some new things for home. This month it was all about wood. I wanted to upcycle things I already had in hand at home, and here are the results:

P6309666

First, I've been dreaming 'bout a relaxing and colourful outdoor space, so I decided to craft this wooden wind chime/mobile. It's made out of wood scraps which and an embroidery loop that had lost it's inner part. The metallic chains are recycled as well. Now it's chiming happily in our garden!

The second design is a small coatrack out of old wooden spools and some scrap wood. It can also be used on a desk to display favourite books and notebooks. It's painted with water-soluble eco-marked paint.

So, once again this competition ispired me to upcycle unused things I already had. Go to see other entries right here!

Tässäkin kuussa Jake & Maya Collectiven upcycling- kilpailu onnistui inspiroimaan minua. Tänä viikonloppuna sain valmiiksi sekä tuulikello/mobilen että naulakon kierrätetystä puutavarasta, jota jo kotoa löytyi. Hyödyllinen viikonloppu siis! Ja olipa taas mukava inspiroitua valmiista aiheesta. Menkääpä katsomaan muut osallistujat täältä, hop!

Paper & Cardboard

Apr 30, 2013

Remember the Upcycled Denim Challenge I took part? Well, I liked participating to it so much I decided to participate also to this months challenge, which is all about upcycling paper! There's three reasons to this:
- These challenges  give me a lot of inspiration and ideas
- I hope that small competitions like this help to raise the avareness of all the beautiful things that can be made by upcycling
- Um, well, even as a professional craft instructor I need sometimes a deadline for my personal projects so that they get finished...

For this challenge, as for the previous one, I wanted to create articles for daily use. In our house, we're always short of storage and small furniture pieces that we can move easily to a new home, as we've been moving quite a many times! This is why I created a storage tray that can also be used as a small shelf, a foldable bowl, and a storage stool.

My main materials were recycled cardboard and recycled wallpapers rather than just paper, however, papergoods were okay and I was inspirad about these materials so I just went for it. I love crafting with cardboard, because it's so sturdy that you can really make a lo of things out of it. The flat cardboard used cardboard made out of recycled paper.

I was also inspired of geometric shapes, hexagon in particular. Here we go!
 P4307451
 P4307452
First of all, here's the foldable storage bowl, it unfolds flat by deattaching the string.I find it's a perfect center piece for a table as it's quite big, roughly 50 cm wide! This one took my a lot of time, just for figuring out the folding system.
 P4307464And here's the storage tray...

P4307470
...that also works as a shelf. I'm thinking to add some compartiments to it, so that I can store even more things when it's on the wall. This is maybe my favourite design out if these, and I'm thinking to make a bunch of these and to hang them all together. If you want to, I can show you step-to-step photos to make this, I took some.

P4307490

P4307481

And here's the stool, it's made out of old fabric spools I got at a local fabric store. It's covered also with recycled wall paper, all different. It's also great for to store all my craft papers, because I can have a different paper quality inside every spool. It's actually so sturdy one can sit on it, but I'm thinking to use it as a bedside table.

P4307493

P4307513P4307537

With the leftover materiel, I made also this pen cup and hair elastic covers, just for the fun of it.

Hope you liked my creations! Ask me if you want to know more of them!

Osallistuin taas Jake & Maya collectionin upcycling- haasteeseen. Tämän kuun haasteena oli paperi. Itse käytin kierrätettyä pahvia ja tapettia, ja tällaisia sain aikaiseksi. Käykää katsomassa kaikki muutkin mahtavat jutut Jake&Mayan blogista!
