Local flowers

 
Last week I got to try flower arranging for the first time ever! They arranged this class at one of the buildings of an old, beautiful manor called Annala. It's also a collective garden, so all the flowers came from their fields just next to the house. Talk about a local product!

Viime viikolla sain ensikosketukseni kukkien sidontaan, kun kävin alkaiskurssin Annalassa. Annala on ihana paikka, ja lisäksi kukat tulivat heidän omilta pelloiltaan ihan vierestä - varsinainen lähituote siis!

And beautiful flowers they were. I just recently read an article about how so many flowers we buy are transported for long distances in cold boxes that it's not really an ecological choice. That's one of the reasons I wanted to take this class - to learn to use the local products better!

Luin juuri artikkelin, jossa muistutettiin siitä, kuinka useat leikkokukat joudutaan kuljettamaan pitkienkin matkojen takaa kylmätiloissa tänne asti. Ei siis varsinaisesti mikään eko vaihtoehto. Se olikin yksi syy kurssille menoon - halusin oppia sitomaan kauniita kimppuja suomalaisista kukista. Ja miksipä ei, sillä tosi kauniitahan nuo ovat!
 

After the class I appreciate the florists even more than before - it took me more than an hour to finish these two bouquets! But it was a nice, quiet pause to the rhythm I've been having recently. Sometimes it's so relaxing to focus on only one thing at a time, right?

Pikkukurssinkin jälkee arvostaa kyllä floristin työtä entistä enemmän. Näiden kahden teoksen sitomiseen meni minulta reilusti yli tunti! Toisaalta viime aikojen aikatauluissa oli tosi mukavaa ottaa pieni paussi ja keskittyä vain yhteen asiaan kerrallaan.

Eating out

This spring, for the first time, we moved to an actual HOUSE! With a garden and all! For me, that was the best part of moving. And now, only a month later, we're enjoying the harvest of our small, urban garden. You can see our kitchen garden just behind me in the photo above. Talk about local food, right?


 

Having our garden is encouraging us to use even more the ingredients of the season. At the moment for us, it's a lot of salad, herbs, cucumber and spinach. So this weekend, we went for the spinach pancakes. I tried this recipe (in finnish), but you can find others online as well. Or create your own by just adding spinach and the herbs of your choice to your pancake batter!

We also had a my kind of a summer setting: dining table oudoors, a white tablecloth and one bowl of freshly picked flowers from the garden. If there's a lesson I've learned, it's that a white tablecloth is always a good idea.

Paras juttu muutossa omaan taloon on ehdottamasti ollut tuo puutarha! Puutarhapalsta näkyy ekassa kuvassa takanani, varsinaista lähiruokaa siis. Omaa satoa pääsee jo hyödyntämään, ja siitä teimme sunnuntaina pinaattilettuja tällä Hannan ohjeella. Maistuivat! Kattauksessa ei kesällä tarvitse paljon mielikuvitusta käyttää: pöytä ulos, valkoinen pöytäliina ja iso kulho puutarhasta vastapoimittuja kukkia. Jos jotain olen oppinut niin sen, että valkoinen pöytäliina vaan on aina hyvä idea.

Mikä on teidän suosikkiruoka tällä hetkellä? Jotain reseptivinkkejä kauden ruokiin?

Dreamin' up the garden space

So, as I said, the thing I'm the most excited about in our new house is the garden. We'll propably end up spending only one summer here though, so we can't do so much, but I'd yet want it to be a relaxing, fun space. First of all, we're going to set up a small veggie garden and plant some flowers as well. But we'd also love to have an entertaining area to do some barbecue and enjoy the endless summer nights with friends. The thing is, everything has to be quite easy to set up and take with us to somewhere else afterwards, and it can't be too expensive, either. Here are some dreams, I hope some of them might come true!

I'd love to have a canopy in our yard. I hope something like this would be possible! 

This as actually not a garden table setting, but I love the styling.

One must add some bunting! This is on my to-do list.

Ihan ekaa kertaa meillä on kämppä pienellä puutarhalla. Joten paras asia tässä muutossa on ehdottomasti ollut puutarhan suunnittelu! Koska ei vielä tiedetä, kauanko taas täällä asutaan, ei puutarhajututkaan voi olla kovin kalliita tai aikaavieviä. Tässä muutamia haaveita, jos ei tähän puutarhaan niin johonkin tulevaan. Lisää keräsin pinterestiin. Jos jollakulla on hyviä ideoita ulkotilan piristämiseen, otetaan vastaan!

Happy Easter! + Easy idea

Hi all! We're back from St. Petersburg, but going through all the photos takes some time. So this time I'm only gonna wish you all Happy Easter with these photos, including something new in the series of an easy idea: finger printing!

 

See how my Easter plants have grown? I've already been eating the barley on my sandwiches.

 

I have no other Easter decorations but pussy willows. But I feel that sometimes it's not necessary to purchase or make all the decorations for all the festivities, sometimes you can go with a minimalistic + natural way. 

And now for the idea of this week: Finger printing. I know it's a little bit late to share Easter craft ideas, but this technique can be used on a variety of projects. The little chicks and the pussy willows have been created simply printing with finger tip on paper. This is an easy thing to do with children also. Just one tip: before printing your finger, print once on foam to leave all the extra paint on it. The egg card is simply decorated with fabric tape.

 

 

I'm going to spend the rest of my Easter holiday baking carrot cake and having coffee with friends. How was your Easter? Was it relaxing? Did you do smething special?

Oikein hyvää pääsiäistä kaikille näin viime tipassa! Koska pääsiäinen kului Pietarissa, tässä vain loppuun muutamia kuvia täältä kotoa. Meillä ei muita koristeita ole kuin pajunkissat, mutta joskus on mun mielestä hyvä mennä simppelillä ja luonnonmukaisella koristelulla.

Viikon ideana on sormenpääpainanta, josta esimerkkinä nämä tiput ja pajunkissat. Tämä idea tulee toki vähän myöhään pääsiäistä ajatellen, mutta sitä voi hyvin soveltaa vaikka mihin. Muista vain tupata sormi vaahtomuoviin tms. ennen paperille painantaa, niin extravärit jää siihen. Korteissa on koristeena myös kangasteippiä.

Täällä loppupääsiäinen tulee kulumaan porkkanakakkua leipoessa ja kavereilla kahvitellessa. Miten sun pääsiäinen meni? Oliko rentoa? Teitkö jotain erityistä?

Easy idea: planting activities

Planting is always fun, but I associate it especially with Easter time, so the idea of this week is to plant something! Here in Finland we plant traditionally ryegrass before Easter, but I decided to plant some easy, edible plants: snow peas, some barley and peppercress.

Here's basically all you need to start planting: potting soil, seeds, and pots.




And then it's time to get started!


And just a couple of minutes later, you'll have this:


Remember to follow the instrucions given with seeds concerning watering, the type of earth, etc. Here I think I planted even a bit too much of peppercress, but hey, at least I'm sure to get something! 

I used these new planting pots I made out of recycled materials. How do you find them? If somebody's interested to see a tutorial, I sure can do that. Also, I love this quote in the background from Ella Wheeler Wilcox: A weed is but an unloved flower. Happy planting everybody!

Istutusjutut on aina hauskoja, mutta itse yhdistän ne varsinkin pääsiäisaikaan. Tällä kertaa halusin istuttaa perinteisen rairuohon sijaan syötäviä, helppoja kasveja: sokerihernettä, ohraa ja krassia. Istutusjuttuihin ei paljoa tarvitse; vain multaa, siemeniä, ja astiat. Itse käytin astioina näitä juuri kierrätysmatskuista tekemiäni, mitäs pidätte? Voisin hyvin tehdä niistä tutoriaalin, jos kiinnostaa. Hyvää kevään alkua kaikille!
