Design process

So I wanted to tell you shortly about my design process. For each project it's very different of course - it all depends of the subject and whether it's a work on a group or just by myself. But I thought it could be fun to share the process behind some craft models.

Well, to start with, for this commission I recieved the materials to be used by the post. I also wanted to include as much as possible recycled everyday objects, such as tin cans and tree branches. I had pretty much free hands with what I was doing, we just decided together it would be best to have four or five different themes. 



I like to start by browsing for some ideas. But I never want to copy a project, so I'm more in a search of colour schemes and atmospheres. For example, this photo was my inspiration for this. And this colour scheme I used for this. I also search for the right colours by myself, using water colours and such. I also have a pin board in my study, where I can collect all the random ideas.

The second part is sketching! I like to sketch, but also to work directly with the materiel. So sometimes there's no sketch and sometimes there's a lot. But sketching is always a good way to remember your ideas and to keep concentrated. When you're working on a commission, you can't only do your personal style, so sketching can help to find new ideas to work with.

After I know what I'm gonna do, I create myself a schedule and work with it. It takes a lot of time, of course, to create things by hand so I try to attack this phase as quickly as possible. But the good thing is that I can listen to music at the same time, it helps to get to work! For this project I didn't take the photos or do the styling myself, but sometimes I do that to. I like it the best when I can controll the process till the end!

I think over the years I've found the rhythm of work that suits the best for me. And my best tools: sketch book, schedule and good play lists! How about you, do you have some tips for working better? Do you like to work by yourself or in a group?

Ajattelin jakaa teidän kanssa vähän omaa suunnitteluprosessiani. Jokainen projekti on tietysti erilainen joten niin on prosessikin, mutta samoja juttuja löytyy kaikista. Esimerkiksi näiden käsityömallien suunnittelu kulki suunnilleen näin:

Ensimmäisenä kootaan briiffi siitä mitä tehdään ja sen pohjalta materiaalit. Halusin käyttää saamieni matskujen lisäksi mahdollisimman paljon kierrätettyjä juttuja, kuten metallitölkkejä ym. Seuraavaksi selailen netistä ideoita. En ikinä halua kopioida suoraan, joten etsin lähinnä oikeanlaista väriä tai tunnelmaa. Esimerkiksi tämä kuva inspiroi tätä, ja tämä väriyhdistelmä tätä. Saatan kokeilla väriyhdistelmiä itsekin vesiväreillä tai muuten. Työhuoneessa on myös aina korkkitaulu, johon voin kerätä vaikka mitä inspiroivaa.

Seuraavaksi luonnostelen ideani. Joskus saatan siirtyä materiaalin käyttöön suoraan, mutta luonnostelu auttaa hahmottamaan paremmin ideoita ja etsimään uusia vaihtoehtoja. Kun työskentelee jollekin muulle taholle kuin itselleen, ei aina voi toteuttaa vain sitä ominta tyyliään. Niinpä luonnostelu voi auttaa uusien juttujen löytämistä. Luonnosvaiheen jälkeen teen itselleni aikataulun ja noudatan sitä itse työn kanssa. Käsin tekeminen on tietysti hidasta, joten aikataulu on oleellinen. Ja hyvä musa, ilman sitä ei tuu mitään!

Ajan kanssa olen löytänyt itelleni työrytmin, joka toimii hyvin. Ja parhaat työkaluni: luonnoskirjan, aikataulun ja hyvät soittolistat! Mites te, onko teillä hyviä työvinkkejä jakaa? Tykkäättekö tehdä töitä yksin vai ryhmässä?

Olipas hassua löytää nämä kuvat, ne on otettu jo monta kuukautta sitten. Hiuksetkin on vielä pitkät :D Taidan työstää juuri näitä, niin paljon pinkkiä kuvassa että huh huh!

it's the thought

Hey all, today I wanted to share something I created some time ago. Remember how we went for a trip in France? Well, there was also other reason than just holidays to go there - my bfs parents had their 40th wedding anniversary. 40 years, just think of that! 

It was really hard to come up with a gift that would suit such a special occasion. Having been together for so long they pretty much had everything, plus our gift needed to fit to a suitcase for transportation! But we knew right away that we wanted to create something handmade, and something they can really use. So my mom and I came up with the idea of sewing some decorative cushions, because they could use them anywhere in their house.



We chose neutral colours we thought they'd like. We already had the linen,it's actually two old table cloths. There were parts we couldn't use anymore, so we had to go with quilting. And since we had to do that, I thought it would be fun to incorporate a message: Each cushion is actually composed of exactly 40 pieces, 20 on each side!


My mom finished her version with a lace she made herself and I embroidered mine with their initials and the date of their wedding. It took some time, but I think it was worth it!

I'm really happy with how they turned out. Even though I've always been sewing a lot, I haven't really been quilting that much. But now I got really inthousiasted 'bout it, since it's a great way of upcycling all those small pieces of fabric!

Viimeisimmälle Ranskanreissulle oli erityisen hyvä syy: poikiksen vanhempien 40-vuotishääpäivät. 40 vuotta, aika mahtavaa vai mitä? Mutta lahjan keksiminen olikin sitten vähän vaikeampaa: jotain hyödyllistä, jotain joka mahtuu lentolaukkuun, jotain erityistä... Mutta yksi asia oli varma: haluttiin tehdä ainakin osa lahjasta itse. 

Lopulta keksittiin äidin kanssa tehdä nämä kaksi tyynynpäällistä. Ne on tehty vanhasta pellavakankaasta, joten piti pakostakin vähän tilkkuilla. Siitä syntyi idea: molemmissa tyynyissä on itse asiassa tasan 40 palaa, 20 kummallakin puolella. Lisäksi äidin tekemässä versiossa on itse nyplättyä pitsiä ja minä taas kirjoin toiseen tyynyyn nimikoinnit ja hääpäivän. Vaikka olen aina ommellut, en ole ikinä harrastanut hirveäsi tilkkutöitä, mutta tämä sai kyllä innostumaan! Tilkkutöihin voi niin hyvin käyttää kaikki palat ja kierrätetyt kankaat.

Easy idea : 3D collage

Just a quick idea for this week: if you like doing collage, try sometimes doing it on a three dimensional objec. I did this workshop one time with a group and everybody loved it, because it's an easy technique but a new approach. I got this big metal jars from a local market, they're used to storage cucumbers! So this is also an upcycling project - from a tin can to a personalized storage bin. Simply cut, glue, let try a bit and seal. What could be more easy?
 

   

Helppo idea: kolmiulotteinen kollaasi. Tehtiin näitä jättipurkkeja yhden ryhmän kanssa, ja se oli ihan menestys. Kollaasi on tekniikka kaikille tuttu, mutta lähestymistapa uusi kun se muutetaan kolmiulotteiseen muotoon. Näitä isoja kurkkupurkkejahan saa ihan marketeista kun pyytää, sillä ne on menossa metallikierrätykseen. Joten samalla tämä on "upcyclingia", roskasta käyttötavaraksi, eikö? Ja tosi helppoa: leikkaa, liimaa, anna kuivua hetki ja lakkaa. Eipä voi paljon helpommaksi tulla!

Idea of the week: Drawing lines (blindfolded!)

Hello all, how's your Monday? To honour the start of the new week I've decided to start a new feature on this blog: Easy idea! The purpose of this feature is to present creative projects that are easy, fun and easily adapted to different groups.

To complete the projects you don't need any former knowledge or experience. I've personally tested all the ideas just by myself and with various groups, from children to adults. Let's get started!

Hei, minkälainen maanantai on menossa? Uuden viikon kunniaksi olen päättänyt aloittaa uuden sarjan tässä blogissa: Easy idea. Sarjassa on tarkoituksena esitellä erilaisia luovia projekteja jotka ovat helppoja, hauskoja ja helposti sovellettavissa.

This weeks project is about art. To get started, you'll need:
- white, thick paper in any size you want
- Black markers
- Colours (water colours, pens, anything goes!)

Tämän viikon aloittaa taideproggis. Sitä varten tarvitset:
- Valkoista, paksumpaa paperia missä tahansa koossa
- Mustia tusseja
- Värejä (vesivärejä, värikyniä, mitä tahansa!) 



1. Draw lines at the paper with the black marker pen without lifting it from the paper. So actually, it's more like a one long line. As you can see in the photo, I tend to draw really geometric, straight lines, but you can do curvy lines, or continuing circles, or anything you want. To make this step even more fun try to do it blindfolded or by closing your eyes, like I did for this example! This is especially funny in a group.

1. Piirrä viivoja paperille tussilla nostamatta sitä paperista. Oikeastaan kyseessä on siis yksi jatkuva viiva. Kuten kuvasta näkee, omani tuppaavat olemaan geometrisiä muotoja ja suoria viivoja, mutta viiva voi olla kaartuva tai ympyrämäinen tai mitä tahansa. Tämä vaihe on vielä hauskempi jos sen tekee silmät sidottuna tai silmät kiinni, kuten esimerkkikuvaa tehdessänikin tein! Tämä vaihtoehto on erityisen hauska ryhmässä.



2. Open your eyes and take a look at your work! Next step is to colour all the areas between the lines that you want with the colours you want. You can choose to colour one only, some of them or even all of them. 

2. Avaa silmäsi ja ihaile aikaansaannostasi! Seuraava askel on värittää viivojen väliin jäävät alueet. Väritä niin monta kuin haluat -yksi, muutama tai vaikka kaikki- niilä väreillä kun haluat.

I also completed one post-card size not closing my eyes and colouring it with water-soluble pens. It's funny, normally I don't use such a bright colours but the spring time seems to make me want to use them all!

Tein esimerkkinä myös yhden postikortin sulkematta silmiäni ja värittämällä sen vesivärikynillä. Hassua, yleensä en käytä kovin kirkkaita värejä, mutta kevät saa käyttämään niitä kaikkia kerralla!

This art practice is so fast to do you can do it as a warm-up exercise, to help you to concentrate. In a pedagogic way, I find this practice especially usefull for people who tend to not to use all the paper (I admit, that's me also!). It's also a good way to learn to conceptualize the size of the paper and everything you can do in it. And then, it's just simply funny to draw something without knowing the outcome :) You can also do it so that one person does the line and other persons does the colouring. There's so many ways to use this practice!

If you should try this by yourself or with a group, I'd love to hear about it! And if you have any other similar projects, I would surely want to give them a try!

Tämä harjoitus on niin nopea että sitä voi käyttää lämmittelyharjoituksena, joka auttaa keskittymään. Pedagogisesti, tämä on mielestäni hyvä harjoitus niille, joiden on vaikea käyttää koko paperia (kuten minä!). Tämän tehtävän avulla voi myös opetella hahmottamaan paperia ja mitä kaikkea sille voi mahtua. Ja lopuksi, onhan vaan hauskaa piirtää jotakin mitä et tiedä :) Voit myös tehdä harjoituksen niin, että yksi henkilö piirtää rajat ja toinen värittää. Tätä tehtävää voi tosiaan soveltaa niin paljon!

Jos kokeilet tätä yksin tai yhdessä, olisi hauska kuulla siitä! Ja jos on mielessä jotakin samankaltaisia projekteja, niin niitä olisi tosi hauskaa kokeilla!
